Gallo DeGroat, Irene V.

Irene Gallo DeGroat, took her final steps to Heaven on Friday, Feb. 27 at the Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice.  Born in Newton, December 11, 1926, daughter of James and Vincenzina Gallo she was a lifelong resident of Newton and Fredon. A Graduate of Newton High School class of ’44, she was still active with the class reunion committee. Irene Served in the Cadet Nursing Corp 1944-45 and was a Graduate of St. Peters School of Nursing class of 1948.

A Registered Nurse, Mrs. DeGroat was on the staff of Newton Memorial Hospital for 45 years. Most proud of her time and efforts in establishing the same day surgery unit, she retired in 1997. Irene was past president of N.M.H. Nurses Association, and Life member of St. Peters Alumni Association. Irene was forever concerned with the well- being of others and shared her compassion as a volunteer at The Sacred Heart Center (Newton), Bodhi Monastery Food Pantry (Lafayette), the Sparta Wellness Center, and Reach for Recovery (American Cancer Society).

 She was a proud member of Karen Ann Quinlan’s “Friends of Hospice.”  She was also a member of the Fredon Hospital Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society (Anna’s Angels), and past member of the Sussex County Cancer Society board.

Irene was predeceased by her husband Curtis L. DeGroat in 1985, sisters Margerite DeGroat (1976), Anna Mills (2007) and Jeanne Rosano (2015), brothers Nicholas Gallo (1976) and Raymond Rosano (2008). Survived include her children David (Louise) of East Stroudsburg, Duke (Dawn) of Frankford and Cindy (John) of Fredon.  Most-cherished grandchildren Melody, Jordan, Angela (Kenney), Dylan, and Madeline, and a most-anticipated first great grandchild. Irene is also survived by her sister Virginia Morville, of Branchville as well as her brothers Albert Gallo of Cedar Grove, and Ernest Gallo of Medford OR. She will forever continue to light their paths of life. Most of all, Irene enjoyed her children, grandchildren, and friends, her love of a long nursing career, reading, word books, knitting, and watching the Mets.

A funeral Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday March 2, 2015 at 10:00 AM in the St. Joseph RC Church Newton. Interment will immediately follow in the St. Joseph Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday March 1, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home #156 Main St (Rt. 206) Newton, NJ In lieu of flowers Irene invites all who wish to donate to The Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice or The Sacred Heart Center of Newton.
