Newell, Olivia Mary

Olivia Mary Newell, 95, of Stanhope passed away at St. Clare’s Hospital, Dover, in the Compassionate Care Hospice on Thursday, January 11, 2018, after a brief illness.

The daughter of George Benjamin Newell and Suzanne Charlotte Newell (Brau), she was born in London. Olivia (Liv to her friends and Olive to her family) trained at St. Thomas’s Hospital, London, England, and while there, during World War II, she worked in the casualty clearing station helping to care for the injured troops returning to the UK. Olivia visited New Jersey in 1952 and worked as an operating room nurse at Presbyterian Hospital, Newark for a year. She enjoyed it so much that she returned in 1955 with her friend Pat, to start their careers in New Jersey. They both spent over 20 years of their working lives as operating room nurses at St. Barnabas Hospital, Livingston, NJ.

She was passionate about wine and was a member of the Benmarl Wine Club for many years. She enjoyed French cooking, which she inherited from her mother, who was half French, and also loved eating. Known for her wit and dry sense of humor, Olivia also had a great deal of empathy for others.

Olivia leaves behind her niece Marion; and her children; Eddie, Florence, Douglas, Lilly and Ben; and her nephew Paul; and his son Graham. She also leaves behind her lifelong friend Pat and many other friends.

As per her wishes, Olivia was cremated Tuesday January 16, 2018. A celebration of life will be held Thursday January 25, 2018 at 11 AM in the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home #156 Main St. (rt. 206) Newton, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Doctors Without Borders at: 888 392 0392, advising that the acknowledgement should be sent to Patricia Partridge.

To the Family of Olivia Newell and her life time friend Pat Partridge, Ann a I are saddened to hear of your loss, Olivia had a great and full life and was loved by so many people she encountered throughout her 95 years, we have great memories of having worked together at Roseland Surgical Center and had become friends as well our Son Gerard likes to talk about the farm in East Hanover she had lived on and how she and Pat got him to assist the farmer baling hay and store it in the barn. We both pray for all of you and ask the Lord to hold her close and give all of you strength during this so sad time in your lives, We like some of you are at a place in our lives where each week we lose another person of the circle of friends and acquaintances, Please know we have you all in our prayers, Ann and John Van Der Bas Myrtle Beach South Carolina
