Castelli, Raphael M. "Ray"

Raphael M. “Ray” Castelli, age 80, of Hardyston Twp., NJ passed away Sunday February 21, 2016 following a long illness. Born in Teaneck, he grew up in Jersey City and spent almost twenty years in Oxford and Washington (Warren County). After three years in Glen Rock, he moved his family to Massachusetts for three years before finally settling in Sussex County for the last 25 years.

Son of the late Felice and Josephine (LaSpina) Castelli, Ray had served proudly in the US National Guard in the late 1950s. His long and rewarding career with John Hancock Insurance Company began in 1966. He was certified as a Charter Life Underwriter in 1973, worked as a General Agent in Agawam, Massachusetts, and was an assistant to a vice president in Boston before retiring in 2014.

A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, Ray enjoyed his time with his family most of all, especially during family vacations and outings. An avid woodworker and carpenter, he used those skills to build ever more beautiful and functional houses and to make many pieces of furniture both for his own homes and for other family members. Working with wood was an absolute joy for him. With natural skill and creativity, he also developed numerous stone, landscape, and water projects. He was a die-hard Yankees fan and loved his pet pug Coco. He truly will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Pre-deceased by his daughter Lisa Ann in 1983, Ray is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years Barbara (Kolbert); his loving daughters Dr. Joanne Weiss and her husband Fred of Chandler, AZ, Lynn Galica and her husband Billy of Monson, MA, and Patricia Castelli of Keswick, VA; and his brother Ernest Castelli and his wife Vivian of Dover, PA. Also surviving are his cherished eight grandchildren: Joel, Erika, Matthew, Drew, Marie, Bradley, Lincoln, and Samuel; and five great-granddaughters: Kaileena, Brea, Rise, Eponine, and Elliot.

Visitation will be held Tuesday Feb. 23rd from 7-9 PM and Wednesday Feb. 24th from 9-11:00 AM, immediately followed by funeral services at 11:00 AM in the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home 156 Main St (Rt. 206) Newton, NJ. Interment will follow in the St. Rose of Lima RC Cemetery, Oxford, NJ. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice www.karenannquinlanhospice.org.

Here are some special memories shared by family and friends.
Dear Castelli Family, I'm writing to express my heart-break and sympathy for your recent loss. Ray was a truly sweet and kind man who just adored his family. I will always treasure the memories I have of sitting with Barbara, Ray, Drew and crazy little Coco in their home, discussing everything from baseball to politics and family. We spent many Thanksgiving dinners together, went for rides in classic cars, and played golf, enjoying one another's company all the while. The love and acceptance I felt in that home gave me so much strength and fortitude. I will be forever grateful and will miss Pops always. With much love and many hugs to you all, Michelle
