Ransnorth, James J.

James J. Ransnorth, 79, passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, March 13th, 2014.  James will be remembered as a gentle and loving family man who genuinely cared about people.

Son of the late Peter and Bertha (Jackson) Ransnorth, James was born in Sayre, PA.  He later relocated to Newton, NJ, before moving to Mt. Bethel, PA, where he lived for 27 years; eventually settling in Parryville, PA in 2011.   A 1953 graduate of Newton HS, he served his country in the US Navy on the USS Borie during the Korean War.  Upon completion of the State Police Academy in Sea Girt, Jim joined the Newton Police Dept., where he proudly served his township for 25 years.  He was highly respected and regarded in the police department, where he acquired the nickname “Sergeant Sunshine,” and became Newton’s first ever police lieutenant.  He loved serving the people of Newton.  Active in his town, Jim belonged to the Harmony Lodge #8 F& AM Masonic Lodge, the Local PBA, and the Blue Knights Chapter 9, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newton.  He was also proud of the lectures he gave to local youths about drug awareness.

An avid fisherman, Jim loved going out on the Delaware fishing for shad and deep sea fishing at the Jersey Shore.  He also had a passion for deer hunting and spent many winters in his tree stand, regardless of the weather conditions.  Later in life, he enjoyed taking his family to Wildwood Crest, NJ every summer for a two-week vacation of fun and sun on the beach.

James is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Nancy Lee (Pumleye) Ransnorth of Parryville, PA; daughters Debra Lee Blais of Brick, NJ and Donna Lynn Mark, also of Parryville; son in law Michael Grant; and his beloved grandson Christian R. Mark.  He is also the proud great-grandfather of Kaen N. Williams.

The family would like to thank St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem and Coaldale, Mahoning Nursing Home and Rehab in Lehighton, and St. Luke’s Hospice for their compassionate and kind care given during this difficult time.

Funeral services for Jim will be held Tuesday, March 18th, 11:30 AM at the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home, 156 Main Street (Route 206) Newton, NJ.  Visitation will be held at the funeral home Monday, March 17, 2014 from 2 PM to 6 PM.  In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 149 Madison Ave, Suite 901, NY, NY 10016.  i R rn` Pϒean War.

Will always have fond memories of Jim. I've known him since I was a child. One of the nicest policeman in Newton. When I came home for visits always said, "hello". Prayers and thoughts go out to his family. Geraldine Winters, Placentia, CA NHS68

From the first day I started as a dispatcher at Newton and until Jim retired I always enjoyed my job when Jim was on duty or in charge. I can share that life in those days and the great times and memories can never ever be out done. They say God makes no mistakes. When he decided to have Jim become a police officer in the Big Plan of Jim's life. He did it right. See you someday again Jim. I'm honored to have been part of your life story and glad you were in mine.

It was comforting as a child to have our own policeman in the neighborhood. He was great with all the kids. My thoughts and prayers are with the family

I am so sorry to hear of Jimmy's passing. I will let my sister Kathleen Pegg Mabee, know if her friend's loss, many times he used to come to our house and read comics and my sister and him and some of his friends would have snacks and hang out. I was the younger sister, so my sister would always say go play and leave us alone, but he was always so nice to me. how the years pass so fast. sorry again, I live in Pa, and only read about this this morning, would have loved to visit the family and say good by to an old friend. xoxoxo
